So finally had a little time to work on the M. Got the head back on and the valves set and the mag put on. But trying to time it I cannot get it to trip when it's supposed to per instructions in the book. Then I found out something interesting while doing a little searching on setting the mag. It talks about some of the M's having a second timing mark. This one has 2 marks. Is that the one I'm supposed to use? It's about a 1/4" past the first mark.

#1 and #4 both click on the two timing marks on the front pulley. These are the timing marks.
It should click just as you cross the first of the two marks.
The single mark is to align the grease fitting at the underside of the clutch housing with the flywheel to grease the pilot bearing.

It trips on TDC get the #1on compression #1 position on the mag is at around 2 o-clock make sure the rotor stops lined up with the tower where #1 wire goes. 1342 firing order mag is either on or off 180

Never knew that about lining up the grease fitting. I've always had to have someone looking for it as I turned the engine.

Ok, so you are saying there are 3 marks?

I've seen 2 within about 1/4 inch of each other.

The book says to go to TDC on # 1, then line up the rotor with the #1 terminal on the disributor cap. Then turn engine over i whole turn to the next TDC. Then rotate the magneto away from the engine until it trips. I can't get it to trip unless I take the bolts out and rotate it back further then what the bolts allow it to go.
So what am I doing wrong? Do I need to be at the second mark on the pulley to be at TDC? That makes more sense I think. But I haven't had the opportunity to go back out to the barn and try that. Probably won't have time until late next week unless it rains and I get a day off. And I'm itching to get it running! But I'm a long ways off yet. I was asked to have it on display in town in mid October but I seriously doubt I can get it ready. I don't have enough spare time to work on it.

Turning engine in normal running rotation the first mark of the 2 close together to reach the pointer is supposed to be TDC. Mark not close to the two is for grease fitting lineup.

As you can see, a long ways to go yet. Hopefully my son will be able to help some too.
