I am looking to buy one or more of he firearms IH made over the years. Would anyone know where I could begin to look for something like that. I've done a quick ebay and Craigslist search and haven't found anything. I am interested in collecting such pieces.

There is a gun site called armslist.com that is a very good place to look. Not sure if the link will work or not
Arms list

Forget Craigslist. It does not allow the sale of firearms. Gun Broker or Armslist is your best bet. IH built firearms are in demand right now so be
prepared to pay the price....

(quoted from post at 09:55:07 09/09/16) If you want a Garand try CMP ( Civilian Marksmanship Program).

I was thinking a "wanted" ad on Craigslist might turn something up. Do you think that would be allowed there and be beneficial? Searching for them when someone doesn't have it advertised to sell usually means you can buy pretty cheap ........unless it is part of their collection or something

Armslist has maybe 4 a year, Gunbroker has
more, but for what they want, it is like they have a Unicorn. 3/4 of rifles on
gunbroker have been re-arsenaled, and few
have original stocks. $1000 will get you
just an IH receiver, the more right parts,
the higher the price...

If you can get the March-April 2015 issue of Red Power Magazine, there is a four page article on the IH made Garand M1. Lots of info on what to look for. Thought I had found one last month, but had had a Winchester .308 barrel put on it. My friend found one that the DoD Cartoche on the stock sanded off and the stock "refinished".
Good luck and keep us posted.

(quoted from post at 07:30:36 09/10/16) A friend of mine is a big time gun collector, and he said that article was right on.

I would love to see that article. I wasn't aware of the red power magazine and I take the harvester highlights one.

About 20 years ago I was working with a group of guys and we started attending Hi-Power rifle matches. Lots of the older guys were still shooting the Garands back then and I shot enough matches with my HBAR to order an M-1 Garand thru the CMP. The first thing that surprised me about that was the postman showing up at my door and handing me a rifle. It seems the US Govt can ship guns any way they want.
Next was the rifle itself; it is a H&R made last year of production with ALL MATCHING NUMBERS! It looks to have not be refinished in any way, and other than some handling marks looked unissued.
I shot a few matches with it, then changed jobs and couldn't compete. Its sleeping in my safe now, alongside some other relics of that era.

My only regret is I didn't order three more of them at that price!

Good luck on your search.
