Generator help

I have an original BN that barely charges the battery on high charge and won't run the lights without discharging. That's at full throttle.
Can I adjust the brushes and correct this? I have never messed with generators, always just take them to the repair shop, so need some advice.
Thanks.
Dave

You need to get the gen trefreshd clan the commutator and clean the slots new brushews and probably bearings and it will be like new again. But before you start use a ohm meter put one lead on battery ground then go to the knob on the lite sw then to gen then to reg or cutout all should read ground if not clean where they are fastened to make sure they are grounded to the battery. If then after the test is charges you have found the problem if not take the gen and reg or cutout to get serviced. You can also make a simple test before removing componets use a jumper hook one end to ground otyer to field terminal on gen while engine is running. If gounding field makes it charge the reg-cutout is not working. Ifg that doesent charge the gen is bad. Do you have a mag or a dist as the mag was factory when new.

It has a mag Gene. Pretty sure the cut out is working as it discharges on low charge and jumps up to slight charge when I turn the switch one click. I kinda want to fix this myself as it is one of the few parts I have never dived into.
Thanks for the advice.

OK Dave the system is working. There is a screw head on the end next to the carb of the GEN. Remove the band look how close the third brush is to the next one if you loosen the screw the plate will move holding the third brush move it closer to the other brush that will make it charge more. If the commutator looks like its dirty ect it does need to be cleaned also if the brushes seem to be worn they should be replaced. Is the belt tight and is the fan belt thght. The fan belt can be tightened using a thin wrench the back nut slides in a slot so dont try to move it put the wrench on the spot in front of the bracket its not easy but can be moved its easier to loosen that part if the hood is off takes a good wrench. try that and we will go from there. Good luck keep in touch. With a mag charge rate doesent need to be very much.

Thanks again Gene. I have made a special wrench for tightening the fan belt as I have 3 BN's and a C. I will take the generator apart next week as I have a busy weekend coming up. I'll let you know what I find.

Before you remove the gen with engine running check voltage on the "A" of the gen will read batt volts with engine off and then read volts with engine running. The Delco Remy # on the tag should be either a 1101423 or 1101355 if its an original gen
