SMTAD progress....

Good morning everyone,

This last weekend I made some progress with the tractor. It had been sitting for about 10 years, under cover in the barn. It now runs and starts on gas, and I am ready to move over to the diesel side of things and get those parts working. When I have it running on gas, the diesel pump's fuel pressure gauge isn't registering anything. I looked in the fuel tank and there was a couple inches of fuel in there.

This diesel engine is new to me, in fact I have only ever worked on gassers so please be patient with me. I have done some research on YT regarding bleeding the system and working on the pumps, however I am not completely confident yet. Here are some questions I have:

1) Can I clean and re-use the 2 fuel filters? (Assuming they are in good condition when I get to them)
And if not, where could I get replacement ones at?

2) Should I drain the tank and replace with fresh diesel? Diesel seems to lasts longer than gas, but I don't know its storage life.

3) When I get ready to bleed the lines, do I crack them open at the fitting before the injector? Does the throttle need to be on at all?

4) If "the rack" is stuck, how does one go about taking the top off the pump to free it? I ask this because when I try to move the diesel throttle lever it won't budge at the pump.

Thanks in advance for any help. I can't be too far away from reviving her! I understand that there may be some seals that leak after sitting for 10 years...so I will have to deal with those accordingly too.

NEVER "clean"and reuse fuel filters. throw them away and buy new from NAPA,etc,or your IH dealer. All it takes is one piece of crap to damage a pump.Just not worth the risk. The fuel is probably OK,but if it makes you feel better,go ahead and drain and put in 5 gal of fresh.Crack the lines at the injectors, the throttle should be on to get fuel to flow.About half is fine.Yes,it sounds like the rack is stuck, but I cant tell how to fix.Do you have books? OM and SM? They will answer a lot of question, and tell the right way to do it.

first of all... if you disconnect the throttle valve from the pump and the pump throttle lever hardly moves in either direction the rack is stuck.you should have about 3-4 inches of movement when its working.and from the sounds of things it is not bled either.
you need at least 2/3 -3/4 tank of fuel so the level is higher than the filters. just let the first filter gravity feed till full the close the bleeder and start tractor and run on gas with the deisel throttle half open. then bleed the other filter while running, and injectors. the pressure will show on the guage , it should be over half way. less and your filters are bad.
to loosen rack i just remove the pump for ease of working on it. takes patience and time with lots of penetrating oil.

Thanks for the reply. My question is, if it is done while on the tractor, does the top half come off easily so you can see inside? By the "top half" I mean the cast piece that the 4 injector lines connect to. Or could I take the side cover off to inspect it? It is the later model pump with IH on the side.

yes you can remove the top cover on tractor. remove injection lines and the nuts and the rest of stuff. lifts off. then you can see the plunger under the oil fill hole that sticks.

Don't reuse those fuel filters,if it were mine get that old fuel out of there and treat the new fuel with a little bit of Howes fuel conditioner.
