Homemade 3rd point on my 450

When I bought my 450 the owner had been mowing with a 3pt mower, he said someone before him had welded it to use it as a 3 pt hitch. Here's what it looks like, do you think I can get by using it to mow and pull a cultivator?

It would probably work for a mower. The problem is cast iron will take pressure or pull loads pretty well. Cast does not like shock loads like the jerking and jamming it can get with a cultivator when it hits a stone in the ground. Yes I know wheel hubs are cast iron or malleable and both have the rubber if the tire to absorb part of the shock from the ground.

A much better place to mount the ears would have been the rockshaft - I've seen a number of
Farmalls done this way, either welded on or clamped around it. In addition to the structural
concerns of welding to the transmission case it looks to me like your 3rd link mounting point is
too high which would mess up the geometry of the hitch. If it were mine I'd torch off the existing
parts, grind it smooth and repaint, and add a pair of ears to the rockshaft.

Brendon, that's a great idea, I never thought of welding ears to the rock shaft. That shouldn't be too hard, thanks loads for the tip.

One thing of course to make sure of is that you allow plenty of clearance between the ears and ball
joint and the transmission housing when the rockshaft rotates through its range of travel. You
should still be able to wrap the ears around the rockshaft close to 180 degrees, though. This will
result in a good, solid connection. Due to the ears moving in an arc the hitch geometry will
change slightly but it will be minimal.

I was thinking of using similar iron as on the transmission but cut out a C shape and weld it on the rock shaft, lowering the fast hitch and mounting it low, after measuring first.

don't weld it to anything. look online there are pictures of fast hitch conversions where the top link bracket is a piece of
steel in a U shape wrapped around the rockshaft. thats whats on my 400 and it works well and wouldn't be too hard to make.

If you do not need down pressure, you could use a chain for the top link. That would also avoid excess pressure on the mower if the rear wheel finds a high spot when the rear tractor wheel finds a hole.

Tom, could you post a pic of the rockshaft on your 400; I have a minds eye what it should look like but I'd like to see someone else's.
I looked online but only saw shop made ones like they sell online auction sites. I really don't want to spend the cash for a 3pt conversion kit if a cpl clevis' or shackles would work.

(quoted from post at 15:51:37 08/31/16) Unless I'm missing something you have a two point Fast Hitch there.

You just need on of these to use three point equipment.

Yeah, they have aisles full of those at the local Walmart... NOT.

You can spend months looking for one of those things, and you'll pay through the nose for it when you do find one. To use the mower now, it's just a whole lot more convenient and affordable to fabricate a basic top link bracket and attach it to the fast hitch rockshaft.
