Farmall A questions.

Grabbed this little A out of a salvage yard near me. It is locked and probably has a lot of engine troubles but still a decent machine. Came with the mower.

A few questions.

No serial tag so presuming seat not original?
Rear wheels are galvanized? Normal?
Cast shifter knob. What year range is this animal?
Any opinions or criticisms.

Those tractors were made 1939 to late 40's, then became Super A's. I've never seen a seat like that on one. I see it has no PTO shaft. That helps with year ID s 42,s and earlier had smaller PTO. I bought one a few years ago that should have been in the junk year. I bought it anyway and got if fixed up with everything but paint. Yours should make a great project to fix up.

looks like a nice find. really complete too, has the tool box and wheel weights on it, as well as the belt pulley. also looks to be a kerosene or distillate tractor with the extra fuel cap on the hood. nice project!!

Correct the original seat support was removed to instal the aftermarket seat. Rear rims were galvanized. nCast shifter knob was war production but could have been added so it realy doesent prove anything. Look for cas # on the tranny on the side by the driver. There would be another on the engine below the ag 3+7+letter. the #s are month then day of that month letter is yr Example "0" is 45 N=44 That tractor was not built in 43 and it was built at the Chicago plant There will be a serial #behind the throttle rod under front plug it will start FAA-12345 any more questions ill be glad to answer i have sold several As and still have 2 That engine left the factory as one which started on gas then when warm switched to distillate a Kerosene type of fuel that was very popular in that era was sort of phased out in late 40s.

For some reason I was thinking it should be up a little higher and more noticeable. I guess I have to write that on off to old age.

I have a sickle bar mower just like that one on my BA. Years ago I took 2 Bs and an A and built my BA. The A had a fight with a tree and lost and the 2 Bs had major problems like a locked up engine so I took the 3 and built a BA

If it has a cast gear shift knob (metal) it is probably a wartime model. I have a 43 with it. The seat is not original.

Seat is a Knoedler 'Easyrider' aftermarket replacement.I have the same seat on a VAC Case.Nice find!

do not let the tool box get away from you. it used to sit beneath the seat. they are quite expensive to replace

The steering is probably really loose but it's repairable. Look behind the carburetor and see if the block has been frozen and busted. If there's a piece there that's been frozen and pushed out as long as the piece is there you can clean things up real good and glue it back in with JB weld. If the piece is gone it's still fixable but won't be as pretty. With that mower and the seat, you probably got a real good deal.

I checked the block and it doesn't have any cracks that I can see. The steering seemed about normal to maybe a tad loose. The galvanized rims appeared fine and the pedals were very tight. No play side to side that I can see. Sad that the exhaust is uncovered but like I said no cracks in the block. I have dealt with this guy a long time and he has been very good to me. He is a great guy. He offered it to me for 400 as is and I jumped on it. I think he didn't want to part it out. He knew he was giving me a good deal as he thought the mower and grill would bring that. I haven't owned an A and I think my dad will take this one.

This salvage yard does not really advertise and probably only the locals know where it is. He does not ship.

Thanks again for all of the information.

First " A " that I have seen in my 65+ yrs. of being around tractors ,that has a gasoline starting tank. To me, that makes it unusual. One nice thing about these tractors is that there are lots of parts avaible, new or used. You got a good deal on this " A ". Those mowers are not easy to find .
We have a Farmall " B " , serial # 50169, that # matches the one on the block. Several guys have said that is one of the very first ones built ? Any comments about that number. clint
