656D with 282...The oil capacity with filter is 9 quarts by the book. If you change the filter you add nine quarts, run the engine check the oil and it is within limits (full). If you let it sit and go back the dipstick will show it 1 quart overfilled. When looking at the owners manual I see that the gas model of this tractor has a check valve in the filter housing to prevent the oil from draining out of the filter and back to the crankcase. The diesel version show no check valve. I talked to an "old" tractor guy (like me...ha ha ha) that said this is normal??? He said some old tractors use to have a dipstick that had two full lines, one for use after sitting and one for after just running?? I am curious to know more about this?? I know that some old tractors did not have a dipstick at all but rather a "petcock" you opened to see if the oil was full??? IF the oil filter is allowed to drain back as I am seeing it would seem that it would take a longer than necessary on a cold start to get the oil where it is needed?? Seems as though this would shorten the life of the engine?? I am very curious to hear any input on all of this. Thanks

Both my 560D and MF 85D drain some oil from the filter back to the pan when setting, and both may take 30-45 seconds to refill the filter on cold start, and then have oil pressure. Been like that for years. On the 85 you can hear the engine get a bit quieter soon as the oil pressure comes up..

Lots of older engine oil filtration systems built that way
and to say good or bad , ah. Most of these engines made it
60 or more years so I guess it works but the dry starts
aren't good in my opinion .

YES..I am not thrilled about the dry start part either. I guess what I explained in my original post is true then..nobody had said anything to the contrary?? I thought someone might tell me I had the wrong information and was wrong. Still Having trouble believing it. I would think if the gas model had a check valve it would not be a big stretch for the diesel to also have one??? Strange..thanks for the replies

I can't find when they changed to the other base, but I did find information that you can convert your 656 diesel to the later style. Not that easy on a 4 or 560 due to the steering shaft interference. One thing to keep in mind though. Your cast iron base has a much better oil pressure control valve than that pot metal base does. I would for sure want the latest style valves in the pot metal one if I was to switch. I repaired a whole lot of those post metal ones over the years with pitted seats and valve discs. Most of the time the drain back valve leaks anyway so you don't really gain much.

Pete,
I wonder where the info is for the conversion?? Do not know if I would do it BUT I would like to take a look at it. I certainly would use the better valves IF I did..thanks for the info.
