I'm looking to buy a 1958? IH t340 crawler, It's in pretty good shape except for the steering clutches/steering brakes which I know very little about, Anyone know anything about these crawlers and how to service the steering parts?
Thanks, dave

You better get a set of manuals! I used to own one of these. Working on the steering clutches and brakes is a major operation. The clutches are inside the transmission housing. There are some adjustments available without removing the transmission cover, but if the clutches are worn out, major work involved. The brakes are dry brakes, the same as on the 340 wheel tractor. They are located in a chamber between the transmission housing and the final drive. Leaking seals on the pinion shaft will result in oil on the brake disks and they won't work. To get to the brake disks, you must remove the treads, and then the final drives. Major work! I wood not recommend you buy it unless it is really cheap and you are able to take on a lot of work to fix it. Parts are not easy to find unless the are parts common to the wheel 340 tractor.
