1950's antifreeze

My dad used to put small grey blocks in the radiator each fall to prevent the radiator fluid from freezing. As I remember they were about 1" square and dissolved in the hot water. Any one know what that stuff was? Just curious as I was thinking tonight about cold weather comming soon.
Thanks.
Dave

I can't help you on the blocks. I do remember my dad and others draining out antifreeze and refilling with water for summer months, then reinstalling antifreeze in the fall

Methanol was used as a mixture with water to prevent freezing. We had a hydrometer that measured Methanol and water freeze protection. There may have been stop leak in the form of blocks. Methanol was easily evaporated, and required frequent monitoring and adjustment of the mix. It also ras reactive to rubber and aluminum system components. Jim
