feller near me has a 140 farmall for sale. some are dressing super a up like a 140 and selling them as 140. how can i tell for sure that he is selling a 140 and not a super a?

I have been seeing this myself. Even seen an A disguised as a 140. Did all 140's have fasthitch? Couple online have no hitch just mounted drawbar.

They came both ways but the fasthitch was a very popular option.

This wouldn't be as easy to disgiuse as you think. The A has totally different castings from front to back including non-hydraulic engine block and different rear castings. The A and Super A also have different gas tanks and shorter radiators. With this, the sheetmetal from a 140 would not fit correctly. Now if it was a Farmall 100 or 130 it would be a little easier to try and disguise it as a Farmall 140 since those have more of the same parts.

What details about the tractor made you think that?

The problem with your theory is that good hoods and grilles for 140s are really tough to come by because so few of them were made and that later sheet metal is really easy to bang up.

I'm sure it's been done when someone just happened to have a dead 140 on hand or picked the parts up cheap at some auction, but it's certainly not a common thing.

i have saw a tractor or 2 for sale, as a 140. the sheet metal did not fit correctly. i am sure that it was probably a super a or some other.
