504 Farmall C-153 swap ???

Farmall 504 c-153 narrow row crop tractor
Hi everyone more questions, while restoring i have recently discovered what appears to be pieces of piston rings in the oil pan.It ran fine when i parked it , it had some blow by.I 'm on my way back together with its redo regardless in hopes of some local shows this year. To close to go back now,and love the machine. After reading archives on rebuilding the c-153 im not impressed with them.
What engines would be good easy candidates for swap?4 or6 cyl, diesel or gas, what can they be found in,what about a cummins engine.Mostly just a show piece. Thanks ahead, ChrisCummins

If you want to make something good out of those 504 drop a 460 engine in her ...... there is all kinds of room up front there for the six no modifacatios to the frame required ...... As for handling the extra power most of the rearend componets are left overs from the 460 .......

Hey Rusty,

Have you actually done this or seen it done? Would like to do that to mine. Agreed, plenty of room up front, but enough for two more pistons without changing the frame rails????? Pictures would be appreciated if available.

I have mine in the shop right now just going through some little stuff, muffler, lower radiator hose, paint the trim. The fan spacer must be 10 inches long, I would thing the 460 would be a nice swap. A 656 would really scream.

What size (displacement)4 and6 cyl. engines will bolt to the bellhousing without to much hassle like cutting the hood. I like the sounds of a 460 six cyl. I wonder how much fab work you have to do?Gas or diesel?I saw all the extra room.Have you done one?

Lots o room!

Frankly, I don't think there's anything that can be just bolted in without changing anything else.

The 504 and 340 are kind of red-headed step children in the IH family. Basically, they are a punched-out Super C engine bolted to a 460's rear end. The 504 added frame rails similar to what you see on a 666 or 686, not the "bump-out" rails on a 460 or 656.

I think the C221, and for that matter a C263, C291 or C301 (all the same block externally), with a 460 rear engine cover, would bolt to the 504's bell housing. It might work, but my concern would be fitment between the frame rails. You'd have to find a 460 and measure.

Can you imagine a 504 with a C201?

Just thought I would throw in my two cents worth. even though its two years later. The c221 wont fit in the 504 frame rails, I know I tried. I took a set of 460 frame rails and bolted up to the 504 housing. the left hand frame rail has on hole that doesn't line up. I drilled and tapped it. The 504 clutch all fits and bolts up. the sheet metal is another project..I lengthened the 504 hood with another hood to the correct length. but the angle of the hood is now different coming off the fuel tank. Still a lot to figure out but its coming along.

Two years later, somewhere along the line I discovered that Leaman Tractor Parts makes a custom adapter plate to put a Cummins 4BT or 6BT into a 504 and other tractors with the 460 size bell housing.

If I had a 504 with a bad engine now and money to burn, I would definitely go with the Cummins 4BT conversion.
