Well, things have been going slow but sure I guess. I found out the valve shafts had multiple flat spots on them and the seats were pounded in, so getting it rebuilt cost me $780. But that included a gasket set, so that helped. And now I have a new valve train to be proud of!

We pulled the oil filter canister and the metal can filter must've weighed 10lbs! Do you think it was factory stock? Which led to us pulling the oil pan, which was the best move I've made since buying the tractor. There had to be 2 inches of gunk, sludge and tar-like crap in there. We actually had to use a putty knife to get it out of there. So you can probably imagine what the pick-up screen looked like on the oil pump. We soaked it in gasoline and cleaned it up until we could see all the holes in the screen.

I took the manifold to a friend who's been in the muffler business for 30 years and he fitted a stainless exhaust in it, then made a 18" straight pipe until I can get a muffler. I also replaced the rubber hoses on the air breather and new fan belts.

Meanwhile while all the mechanics were underway, an out of work painter approached me about painting Charlene. I told him I couldn't afford it and he said that I could. He priced it so low I couldn't say no. He spent several days on it, pressure washing it, priming it, painting it to make it look new, then trimmed it out.

We started back today, running the valves etc., and hoped to fire her up; but it was not to be. Hopefully tomorrow we will get her running, then I'll post some pics of her in her new clothes.
