Super m timing

Hi all,

My super m has an electric ignition, and is 12 volt. When the kit was installed the tractor was running well, but after sitting a couple days the points would require filing and resetting before she would start. When it ran it was strong and started right up. Now with the electric ignition it is smoking really black and back firing a lot. It blew the rain cap off, and sometimes it will stall and then run backwards blowing gray smoke out the air cleaner. So I checked the wires and they were on the cap wrong, so I put them how they should be 1,3,4,2. I then realized that the rotor does not point at #1 when the timing mark is lined up on the crank pulley. There's only one mark on the crank pulley, and I need to make sure that it's on the compression stroke but it's obvious someone took it off and timed it incorrectly. Am I going in the right steps here? I'll try to attach a picture of the crank pulley and mark.

That looks good if the piston is on the compression stroke. Turning it with the hand crank, or by lifting one back tire an putting it in high gear, (with help) can
determine compression stroke by putting your (or helper's thumb over the #1 (front) spark plug hole. When pressure is felt, turn until the marks line up as pictured.
The ignition timing is then set to just open the points at that moment. Use a volt meter, or test light to observe the moment the light goes on, or voltage is present.
at the distributor side terminal. Check from ground to the terminal. Turn on the ignition only long enough to do the test, as the coil can overheat if left on. Make
sure the distributor shaft bushing is good. any side to side up or down play that is visible or you can feel is too much. Jim

yes as jim says. the rotor should be pointing to the 2 oclock position and little point bolt on the dist. side sits at 3 oclock position from factory when its timed correctly. but the rotor can be pointing at 4, 8 , or 10 oclock and be timed correctly with the wires following from there. but it is not a factory position. all engines have a # 1 starting position from factory. have seen all kinds of things. thats why i can walk by a tractor and just look and see if its correctly timed to factor position. even the old magnetos used 2 oclock for # 1 wire.
