Hello,

I have a IH 756 Tractor. When I am doing hay my pto quits running when i am going down hill. I am wondering if it could be the pump or a bad valve. If you have any into on this it would greatly help.

Thanks.

Check trans/hyd fluid level.IPTO pump picks up fluid at the rear of tractor.Pump probably sucking air going down hill if fluid level is too low.

Oil level is too low.Fill to 'Full'.The pto is the first thing to 'starve' when the oil level gets low.Adding 5 gal extra of
oil wont hurt a thing,either.

I don't know how low it has to be for this to happen. But it might be a good time to drain the rest of it and have a complete oil change. I doubt that it has been changed recently, probably plenty of junk accumulated in the bottom that is better not in there. I think you are looking at 17 gallons for a change.

(1) hyd. oil way to low , (2) hill way to steep. (3) PTO pick up tube loose in the mounting bracket and causing the seal to leak . Probably at one point in time someone removed and reinstalled the PTO and really did not know what they were doing and banged the pick up tube and this caused the tube to colapes where it sets in it's mounting bracket and you have a flat spot and this allows the tube to flop around and the suction seal is sorta wimpy and it will suck air when either the fluid level is low or when going down hill as all the fluid all runs forward and away from the pick up. Just loosen the PTO is bad enough but when you loose EVERYTHING going down a STEEP hill things get intense fast.
The pick up tube can crush vary easy as it is thin and does so at the mounting bracket when it is bumped while removing the PTO for repairs or when going back on . The best way to handle this unit is to be suspended with a cherry picker and either slip a piece of pipe over the out put shaft or a pointed pry bar in and open bolt hole and as you come out or going in the ft. must be tipper up and slid in or out with great care .
IF the tube is dented in you can remove the dent with a 5/8th deep well 1/2 inch drive CRAFTSMAN socket . NOW what i have been doing also is placing a small tack weld one the tube once i have it set in the proper possession with the weld on the U clamp not the bracket with a mig welder and NOT blow a hole in the tube.

I braze the tube to the U clamp after getting it properly positioned and aligned.
