tranny area. heard someone say 80-140 , or 80-90w
get lube ? which would be the best one ? and what
brand ? does Napa sale a good brand ?

if you live where it gets below freezing, and you need to operate it then, use the 80-90 otherwise use the heavier oil it will be quieter. Jim

Gear lube is about as universal as it gets. It's one oil where you can safely shop for the cheapest price, or get from the most convenient source without worry, because it's just thick oil. Either 80W90 or 85W140 will work just fine.

and its not like a cub will be put under heavy load for extended prolonged periods. so dont matter on oil or brand. but a heavy log truck running down the hyway needs a good quality oil as those diff's get hot.

Back when we used to use the Cub as a snow plow in winter, we used CIH's HyTran. Winning stuff in winter, but made the transmission disconcertingly noisy and leaky when we mowed with it in summer. Now that we don't use the Cub in winter, we put 80W-90 in the transmission and HyTran in the hydraulics.

On the Cub forum, I was told not to use EP trans. oil. Seems it doesn't like the bronze bushing in the tranny. Just regular 90W or such.

Did a complete transmission rebuild on an M and dealer told us to use 90. That was over 30 years ago and no problems using 90 weight.

From -Machinary Lubrication- Extreme Pressure (EP) Gear Oils
EP mineral gear oils are used more extensively in worm gears. Under conditions of high pressure and temperature, the EP (antiscuff) additive reacts with the metal surface to form a soft, slippery chemical layer which prevents severe wear and welding. Previously, there was a concern that sulfur-phosphorous EP additives would react with the bronze gear. However, new EP additive technology used by most of the major lubricant suppliers has reduced the corrosive attack by utilizing nonactive sulfur. EP lubricants work particularly well when shock loading occurs. EP gear oils also protect steel gears better than compounded gear oils.

just changed the transmission out and steering housing with Lucas 80w-90 going to run its some in th morning see how it does (; i heard Lucas gear oil it very good stuff
