53 SM is fast

I was at a stone boat pull yesterday. Since I have been pulling with it, I have gotten random comments from people asking which gear I was pulling in. When I say 1st gear, I get "really? That was kind of fast".
Another guy was there with a 1952 SM. He was running 16.9/38 rears and they appeared to be 2" taller than my 15.5/38's. By ear, our RPM's were about the same at full throttle. I am sure there was some amount of variance but you couldn't tell.
So he had an idea to do a 1st gear race. At full throttle, I was pulling away from his tractor. With his noticeably bigger tires, he should have been going faster than me.
By guess, I would say my tractor was .1-.2mph faster than his.
Why would this be? My theory is that someone might have swapped in W6/SW6/400/450 utility ring and pinion gearing. If that's why, how much faster would a SM go with a set of utility ring and pinion gears?
This is a good thing for transfer sled pulls, but she kind of struggles with a heavy stoneboat in 8000lbs class and runs out of power in 9500lbs class on the stoneboat, but excels on a transfer sled in those classes.

Also, his SM had a D and a J on the serial tag after the serial number. I know the J is Rockford clutch, but whats the D mean?

Yours may be running a bit fast, or his may be running a bit slow. Tweaking the governor is relatively easy.

When I got my 1940 M, I thought it was running rather slow, so I put an RPM gauge on the pto shaft. I got just a hair over 500 rpms. Should have been 540, So I adjusted the governor to get 560 rpms. That old M was a whole lot happier.

I don't know if this would help but first gear in an M or super M is 2.6 MPH and first gear in 400-450 is 2.5 MPH.

D = came equipped with 5000 foot pistons, step head for higher elevation operation. Without looking it up to be sure think I remember a way to check R&P in a SM. If the hand crank works. Jack up one wheel and put in 5th gear. If it takes less than 7 engine turns to turn axle one time it has a faster R&P. Over 7 original.

They also made them with picker gears. That is a slower than normal 1st gear. The other guy may
simply have one of those. It's takes a pretty souped M to be able to pull deadweight in the heavier
classes without a TA or picker gear. And then you start breaking things like wheel clamps. Don't
ask me how I know.

Hard to judge equal rpms by ear.

It may have been more telling to drive along side him and slow yours to match his speed - THEN listen to the engines to judge if one's turning faster than the other.

Yea I noticed. She ran out of power in 9500, simply isn't geared for it as you said. John Deeres with much less horsepower pull that class and higher with those really low first gears.
I like pulling my SM on a transfer sled. But theres not too many of those pulls around here.
