D-282 tune up advice

The 282 in my 656 starts hard, what would I tell my diesel
mechanic to do as far as pump adjustments? Tractor is just
getting back to work after 11 yrs of sitting around. Bottom line
is it skips a touch when cold and it's 70 plus outside and I
need that tractor to go when it's 30 below zero. Thanks -Neil

They need functioning glowplugs to start, even on a 60 or 70 degree day.

That's where you gotta start. Even if the spray pattern from the injectors is a it off or compression at cranking is a bit low they'll light off if the GP's are working.

If you had the head done and they ground the valves instead of replacing seats and valves you likely don't have the specified protrusion. About the only advise I can give you is to put a block heater on it for winter and live with it. Check your valve adjustment again.... Chance one is tight is a possibility

What do you mean by starts hard? They will not start without glow plugs even in summer, and also will cough and sputter till warm up, just the nature of them. Might not need anything.

Make sure the pump timing is where it should be by the service manual. I know my 560 does not like any change far as timing goes cause I've tried it. Mine started worse when pump was either advanced or retarded a bit. If the cylinder head is ever removed for service don't grind the valves and seats much, or compression heat is lowered for starting when the valves are lowered. It costs more, but I prefer new seats and valves if needed to keep the valves close to flush so the compression heat for starting is high as possible. My 560 needed all new exhaust seats as the valves were to low. If your mechanic is handy with a drill and tap the glow plugs can be updated for faster heat. I reworked my injectors with a metric 10 x 1.0 tap and put in the Ford 2000 pickup plugs. In summer it will start in under 15 seconds now.

If you have to tell your mechanic "how to adjust" your pump,he's not much of a mechanic. The 282 engine is by nature a hard starter. It may acctualy be starting normally. They take some cranking, and sputter, pop, smoke till warm. No amount of pump 'adjustments' will help starting if the glow plugs are not working right.Check/service glow plugs first before 'pulling the pump'.

i have a 282 in a 560, and that is the easiest starting tractor i have seen. it has 5500 hrs. and nothing was touched on the engine from factory. 20 sec. on glow plugs and 2 turns and running. after shut down to resart after 5 minutes or so i dont even use the glow plugs. no smoke sputter on cold starts. thats the way they should start. they do start easy but things must be in top condition. good battery's, correct cranking speed, good glow plugs. timing set to spec. engine in good shape.
why would you be adjusting timing? it did not change from sitting. better be checking fuel filters and glow plugs. in cold weather they will smoke till they warm up. you must keep holding the glow plug button till smoke clears! other wise that is what they do.

The original glow plugs have 3/8 X 24 fine thread like bolts, the 2000 Powerstroke glow plugs have metric thread, 10 MM X 1.0 pitch, that's the tap I used on the injector body. Don't remember what drill bit I used for the metric tap to work. I have not tried it but using a 3/8 X 24 fine thread die on the new glow plugs should work also, then the injector holes could be left as is. The wire ends will need changed as the plugs have a bullet type end. My 560 will now start with 10-12 seconds plug use when cold, and I hold the button until I see oil pressure come up.

A I-H 282 diesel is like a old woman. It takes a lot to get her to come alive. Takes a little time and playing but she will start. You have to give her time to warm up and get ready for action, but after she is hot, she will rock n roll and get the job done.
