found the no spark problem: the points were burnt up.

question? what would cause my points just to burn up just like that. you could see where they got fried?

A number of things can cause that problem.
#1 being a 12 volt conversion with out a ballast resister with a 6 volt coil.
#2 a weak condenser which will also cause the points to burn out fast
#3 leaving the ignition turned on when it is not running
#4 having an alternator or generator that is putting out way to many volts and causing the battery to be over charged so then the volts are higher then they should be

Congratulations, as I always tell people CHECK THE POINTS FIRST as that's more common of a problem then the Coil for sure, glad we helped.

Reasons for premature point failure can be among other things: Improper gap,,,,,,,,Weak, disconnected, or incorrect sized condensor,,,,,,,,,,,,Excess current draw much over 4 amps caused by such things as the wrong coil (like say a 6 volt unballasted coil on a 12 volt tractor), incorrect (too low) ballast resistance if one is used,,,,,,,,,Oil or grease accumulation on points surface,,,,,,,,,,Foreign material on the face of the points,,,,,,,,,Points that aren't aligned or mounted correct leaving non flat surface contact,,,,,,,,,,,forgetting and leaving ignition on,,,,,,,,,,,anything else that contributes to excess points current caused by too much voltage.

Hope this helps, make sure you have the correct coil and/or ballast if one is used plus a good condenser.

One source of foreign material is abrasive paper. Cleaning points with emery cloth etc. will usually cut the life short.

EXACTLY, I recommend a points file instead as some (not all) sorts of sandpaper or crocus cloth etc. can possibly leave a residue like you mentioned. If its ONLY a gray oxide coating versus any bad pitting or burning or carbon, that's where a dollar bill works good to clean/buff it off.
