another question on charging my A

Recently I asked some questions about getting the 6 v generator to charge on my A. Hopefully I followed the directions right. I grounded the field on the generator and nothing happened. The with the field grounded I touched a wire on the regulator between the armature and battery connection. When I do that the amp meter goes full negative. What is that telling me.

Polarizing the generator is what happens when that jumpering is done between Bat and gen. This jumping should be one second only, It will cause the discharge when done. The fact that it discharges indicates that the armature brushes (at least the grounded and Arm brushes) are connected appropriately. The grounding of the field (and running the engine at 3/4 throttle) should produce charging at the amp meter. If not, the field windings, or the third brush (if it has one) are open. Jim

If when its running you ground out the gennys FLD post you have effectively set it to max charge and by passed any Voltage Regulator control or problems so if it still dont charge and all else is well?? the genny may be be bad.

When you jump BAT over to GEN/ARM on the VR you're shorting the battery to ground via the brushes and armature which causes a heavy discharge. IT TELLS YOU the Armature and Commutator and Brushes at least have continuity to ground via the grounded brush but says nothing about the field windings which must be intact and not shorted to case so she can charge.

Did you try the Motor Test described in Para 5 of my Troubleshooting Procedure??? 1) With the belt removed if you ground the FLD post and then apply hot voltage to the ARM post it should spin meaning the armature and brushes are basically okay. 2) THEN if you remove the FLD ground she should speed up and if so that says the Fields are intact. If it passes BOTH they usually charge.

The VR and Genny both need good grounds

If you didn't already, work through my Troubleshooting Procedure for more detailed testing to determine the problem!!!
