Near-Original SMTA

Recently drug this one out of the shed, and thought I'd post a couple of photos just for the sake of general information. I'm the second owner. The original owner was a neighbor who had a custom hay baling operation back in the '50's. During its working life, this tractor's primary, and very nearly only duty was to haul and operate a New Holland 77 PTO baler around the hills of northeastern PA, hence the license plate on the grille. I bought the tractor and the baler from his widow in 1988. The non-original items on this tractor are the tires, the muffler, the battery and ignition parts, and the radiator hoses and clamps. The front hitch bar is owner-designed and fabricated for use when he got too close to the swamp, but doesn't appear to have gotten much usage. So, other than that, it's just about the way it came off the truck. He hitched the baler to a plate bolted to the stationary drawbar, and the swinging drawbar was used only as a step for getting on and off the tractor, It has never been hitched to. I have many more pics of the tractor from various angles, which I'd be happy to post if there's interest. Hope you enjoyed the trip back to 1954, as I do every time I look at it.

Great looking tractor. Does it still have the radiator shutters? See it's missing the operating link below the oil fill.

As for the front weights, it's had them from the first day I laid eyes on it in 1954. Thought they looked out of place back then, but I've kind of gotten used to them. It sure does steer easily with the tires set in like they are, but don't even try to sneak through a wet spot, 'cause they don't go through mud worth a hoot.

As for the shutters, I believe they are present, but since the tractor is about 150 miles from where I presently am, I can't confirm my suspicion. However, all the tractors that I am familiar with that were sold by the dealer that this one came from, Max H. Parke in Montrose, PA, had shutters, and that includes my H and MD. I believe they were ordered that way since many were used to haul manure year-round, and with shutters you at least had a chance at getting them up to operating temperature in the winter.

Well, since I have known this tractor since it was new, I believe you are wrong on both counts. However, I will do a little research and post back with the results.

I agree. The homemade front hitch bar is too close of a match to the color to be original. I think its probably part of the dealer repaint program. Plus the decal has the red background, which was used to cover old decals that faded sitting on the dealers lot, and are a cheap replacement for the original decals.

yes, and the decals are not even in the correct position from factory. and the paint is not even the correct color. and that push bar is painted exactly the same as the tractor. no way original paint.

Nice tractor I like the weight setup. Kind of surprised to see so many on a tractor primarily used for baling hay. If the front hitch was put on when the tractor was new it should match the paint. It's not like the original paint jobs from the factory were anything special - nor were the assembly line workers especially worried about exact (?) placement of decals. My BIL got a great deal on a new Plymouth minivan because while the title and exterior said Plymouth everything on the interior said Dodge - straight from the factory, if they could screw something like that up in the 2000s exact decal placement (not saying its wrong) in the 1950s seems pretty minor.

My Uncle bought this one in the fall of 1953 in Lexington, Ky. It has never been out of the family, he gave it to me in 1992 when he was about 95 years old. I have done quite a bit of work on it. He had a road building construction company and he pulled a sheep foot roller with it. Ellis

Having done some work on this tractor, I can assure you that it has original paint and decals. After 62 years of age, some of the paint is quite thin and only shows one coat. It has a darkened patina because of its age so it may not look like the correct color. It is incredible condition showing no dents or even a tear in the grille screen.

I like it!!! Just one question though. Did the tractor ALWAYS have those weights on the front wheels?

Rusty, my brothers SMD has identical front wheel weights, but has 6 of the flat round weights on the rear, same as my 450.

Actually, I guess now its my SMD...but I'm not used to thinking of my brother as gone.
