H muffler question

Looking for a new muffler for my H, found a couple choices several places, including here on YT. What, other than size is going to be the difference between the 5 1/2" dia. and the 6" dia. mufflers. Is one going to be louder or deeper sounding? the 5 1/2" is listed for the H family only, where as the 6" is listed for H thru 560.

The 'bigger' muffler(H-660) will be louder. The 'smaller'(H only) is 'correct'. The biggest difference is the outlet is smaller. However I have the bigger muffler on both H anM,and have seen(and driven) other Hs with the bigger muffler. All were acceptble.Either will work equally well.. Buy whatever 'turns your crank'. LOL

Ya, that's what I was thinking, probably go with the smaller one, just because, even though here on YT, the bigger one is about 5 bucks less.

Go for the smaller, quieter one if you are going to use the tractor regularly. Listening to the blatt of load exhaust is tiring and hard on your concentration.

If you buy a can of high temp bbq paint and spray the whole thing into the inlet and the outlet the muffler will last much longer. It will take several painting sessions to use up the whole can.

What you are looking for will not last very long. The expensive mufflers sold by Steiner and others will last, and are built to the 50's IH specs, appearance and sound.

No offense to this site, but get the one from Steiners, I think it was designed by (Bermuda) Ken Updike, I bought one from him, sounds SWEET.

Hey all who answered, thanks for the comments, NO offense to YT, (it is a great sight), was going to buy locally anyhow, just due to shipping cost, (I'm on the east coast).
Riverbend, thanks for the idea with the BBQ paint, I think I'll try it.

Get VHT header ceramic paint and bake it on like they direct you to. I have used BBQ paint and it doesn't last. I can burn BBQ paint off after just 2 pulls. The ceramic paint has been on 4 years and shows no signs of burning off. The first photo is the BBQ paint that didn't hold up. The second is the VHT ceramic paint that has been on 4 years.

The factory reproduction that S teiner Tractor Parts sells is quieter than the aftermarkets.

My experience, the straight-thru one, even with the louvered slots inside, is unacceptably loud. The internal flat baffle, is OK and gets quieter as the years go by, somehow.

Glass pack works great, Working one summer for farmer with super H and straight pipe. couldn't hear for a week. found a glass pack on side of road put it on, I swear tractor ran better.

The "factory reproduction" or "restoration correct" mufflers are straight-through too. No baffles.

I've been told that the original mufflers did not have baffles by several people.

Walker and Nelson use to make mufflers for tractors and they had baffles in them. At one time IH dealers did sell mufflers with baffles. If you ever run a
tractor with a baffled muffler you would not want to go back to your old muffler. The baffled muffler has no effect on performance of the tractor.
