The temp. Gauge on my 986 pegs to the right when I turn on the key. Sometimes it will read normally, what is the best way to ck the sender? And also what is the best way to remove the sender? Thanks , DTK

Most are single wire devices that use a temperature sensitive resistor in the block. As the coolant heats, the resistance goes down, increasing the flow of electricity to ground, making the gauge go up. If at times the gauge goes to full scale, it indicates to me that the wire is rubbed through the insulation and shorting to ground. I would remove the existing wire from both ends, and replase it temporarily with new. If the issue goes away, I would trace the original to determine where it is shorted. then repair it and buffer the the area with tape or a plastic wire loom to prevent issues. If no difference, I would replace the sender. Jim

Thanks Jim , l should have said that I also replaced the main harness from the alt. back to under the cab so all tha t wire is new. Should l warm up the engine and try to back out the sender? DTK.

Giving advice on things to twist off is dangerous. I would probably put force on it force on it tighter and looser for 20 minutes (but not deforming it. Good
luck. Jim

When you have that sender out then it is a good time to replace with a mechanical one that comes with a gauge.
