706 with 310 German

I'm having trouble with my farmall 706 with the German 310 engine. It's starting hard even on hot days. Have to give it a snuff of ether if you let it sit a day. Will start on its own after it's been running. Any ideas would help.

This morning I put the battery charger on it and still no start. I then pulled the kill cable out to the sweet spot like I do in the winter with my 756 and it fired up without ether.

Most all german diesels need to be started with the shut off in the start position why would you think your 706 german would be different than your 756 german? Just curious.

I never have to pull the kill switch out on my 756 in the summer. Only in the winter when gets down in the 40's. My dads 706 and 826 are the same way. Just trying to figure why this 706 is so hard starting. It blows a little more smoke than the 756 but seems to run and sound good.

Those German diesel have to have the pump cable in that sweet spot to start correctly . So know I don't understand why you are using starting fluid.

Our other German engines fire right off not having to pull the cable unless it cold. I hit it with ether so it'd start. I then wondered what it'd do if I used the cable in the sweet spot and tried that and it started up. I just don't understand why this thing won't start up without using the cable like our other tractors. We have another 706, 756, and 826 that will all fire right up without pulling the cable, only use it when temps are in the 40's and below

The start position works well on those pumps if it's set right, and is needed more as the pump wears over time. Most will start without using it IF the hydraulic head is in really good condition. Hard starting when hot is the first sign the head is getting worn internally..
