Found a brush mower i plan on powering with my m. Problem is the gearbox is only rated at 40 hp. Ive never had it on a dyno so im not sure what my m puts out but its stock as far as i know. Would it hold up with no slip clutch or am i asking for trouble?
Thanks

since the M does not have a live PTO I would suggest using and overrunning clutch on pto. Without it you may not be able to stop tractor.

Your M was rated at 36 horsepower at the PTO or belt pulley when it was new. The upgrade engine kit with the 4" pistons would add about 10 horsepower, for a total of 45 to 46. Shouldn't have any problem with that brush mower.

I think he is more concerned about the 40hp gearbox holding up behind the M, not whether the M has enough power for the mower. Maybe I am reading it wrong. Also, as stated , needs an overrunning pto coupler.

I think that would be a good fit for your M as it shouldn't completely overpower your cutter's gearbox. As others have said, you definitely need an ORC.

A slip clutch is different from an over-running PTO clutch. You need both. The mower should already be equipped with the slip clutch. It will be located just ahead of the gearbox, and the PTO shaft is attached to it. You may want to loosen up that slip clutch to where it slips easily, and then retighten just enough so that it does not slip while mowing easy going stuff. If that slip clutch is rusted up, or set too tight, you could grenade the gear box, or even damage the PTO in the tractor.

Some bushhogs have shear bolts to protect the mower gearbox instead of a slip clutch. Shear bolts are cheaper to manufacture and I actually prefer them to the more expensive slip clutch protector on a mower that sits outside as the shear bolts have much less chance of rusting all together. Just put the proper grade bolt back in when they shear (usually grade #2).

As for the 40 hp gearbox rating that is pretty much the industry standard on cheaper mowers. They work fine for general bushogging of grass and weeds even behind big tractor hp. Heavy doses of small trees then I would opt for a heavier grade gearbox (More $).

I do recommend the over running clutch for the PTO on the M. Use one on my M or h when I bushhog and works well.
