Dad has Farmall A with a mounted sickle mower, hand lift. Runs great. With what research I've done here, I assume it is an A-16 model. I have a picture but it is only of the side of the tractor and mower so you really can't see much of the mower. It bolts directly to the tractor and has sort of a cross arm supporting the two main arms.

Anyways, he seems to think the guards and sections are specific to that mower but everything I'm reading on here says that all of the ih mowers have pretty much universal guards and sickle sections. True? Who's right on this? Of course, the mower is 1600 miles away at the farm in Montana.

The reason I bring this up is that even after 45 years of life, my Dad can still get bent out of shape over things I do that he doesn't necessarily approve of. lol. I was on vacation at his place at the beginning of the month. Helped with hay, worked on small projects around the farm he needed help with and cleaned up around the place. He's 76 but still going strong.

So I dug the A out to mow down the driveway ditches so everything looked finished. He wasn't around just then. I made one round and started down again. Well here he came and didn't want me to cut anymore because I might hit a stone and break a guard or knock out a section. He didn't have anymore on hand. It makes me laugh that he got on to me like I was 15 still, LOL. So I just smiled and he finally calmed down about it. Old Coot!

So I'd like to find out if these are just common parts and he doesn't know it.

Your correct you can buy the guards and section at any farm and home store I know I have an A-16 mounted on my BA which is the front half of a B and the back half of an A. Before I put that sickle mower on my BA I rebuilt the cutting part of it so I knew it would b ready to cut my hay. I do not off the top of my head remember the section number or guard number but I could get them if you want me to. Matter of fact I just replaced one of the sections not long ago. I also switch it over to bolt on type sections instead of the rivets

I think that there all the same. I just rebilt my a-16 and used the gaurdes from a v 25 ih mower. I even used the cutter bar from it and just cut it off to match. Bob

They should be just common 'mower gaurds'.I think they were common to most if not all mowers. The sections are the same
way.Just measure the holes center to center. Most are 2 ",some are 2 1/16. As was said, they can be bought at any 'farm
store',and numerous mail order scources.

Thank you all for the replies. After reading through a search about IH mowers here, I kind of got that idea they were all pretty much interchangeable.

So I'll have him measure the guards and sections. Then I'll swing through the local farm supply store and get him some extras so he doesn't throw a fit next time I mow his road ditch to make it look nice!

Thanks guys!

There not all the same but there is only 3 or 4 types of section and the difference is the holes and how wide they are. Learned that years ago when I grabbed a pack of section with out checking which one I needed and the holes where off. All the sections I buy have A or B or C on them but do not remember if there are more or not. Same witjh the guards they are not all the same but ya look the same but some are wider then others so also will not fit unless to have the guard numbers

If you look on the sections you should see a letter. Be sure you buy ones that have that letter or you will find that the rivet holes will not be the same as what you have. Same holds true on the guards they too should have numbers etc on them buy the same. Learned the hard way years ago that sections and guards can be wider or narrower so you have to get the correct ones but there are only 3 or 4 different sections Like A, B, C. But hen there are a number if different type of those sections. Like serrated etc
