Hello JimB2,
(Did this gentleman's issue get resolved.?)

I'm in a similar situation where all of a sudden the PTO won't engage. The lever/linkage assembly appear to operate correctly, as
the valve/boot on the MCV moves in/out with the lever action. I recently changed the hydraulic filter (not sure this had
ever been done) and a leaking hydraulic line, but the PTO has been engaged/disengaged several times since then as I've
mowed our fields twice. All other hydraulic functions work fine, power steering, 3-pt hitch lift, etc.

I'm going to pry that rubber boot and see if I can some Super WD-40 in there... The lever "feels" like it's not fully
pushing in the PTO valve/boot assembly.ie.. It doesn't feel "free" when engaging/disengaging the PTO. Feels like it's "gunked-up".
Wish me luck!!

Hi, also check for junk down behind seat that prevents PTO lever from fully engaging. This having season my brother's 474 (same tractor except 4 cyl D-206 engine), the PTO would stall on his round baler when the bale got near completed. He did the clean out the trash behind the seat, lube all the mechanism and it has been working fine since.

Good luck
JimB

Hi JimB,

Well, removed seat/bracket to get a good luck, lubed everything down and it didn't fix the problem. The lever and linkage is all clear and moves freely.
The valve assembly (under boot) "appears" to engage/disengage fully in the MCV. However, it "feels" mushy, and I can't feel any pressure or activation
going on in the MCV. Could this control valve assembly itself be the problem.?.. Looks like a 1" or more hex bolt into the MCV. Pic shown.

I recently had to replaced a leaking hydraulic line..but I didn't bleed anything. Is it possible that I have air in the lines, etc.
I don't have guages to check any pressures, but I do remember the very first time I ran the PTO, it took a second or two to engage after I threw
the lever. Since it has worked fine a few more times since, I didn't think any more of it..

Hi Kcarpenter, since it quit all of a sudden, there is a possibility that the pressure regulator, item 32 and 33 is stuck in the bore allowing no pressure to the PTO circuit. Try dead heading the remote hydraulic outlet or turning the steering wheel to the left until you hear the steering hydraulic relief valve buzz.
Beyond this you will require a manual and some gauges. There are also a couple hydraulic oil sealing rings on the 1000 RPM shaft that seal the hydraulic oil flow to the PTO clutch. If one of these sealing rings blow out there will be little or no hydraulic pressure to the PTO clutch. With nothing connected to PTO shaft and when you engage PTO does the PTO shaft turn?

Thanks Jim.
This is where I'm heading next... No, the PTO shaft doesn't turn when engaged..even without the mower (or anything) attached.

Well Jim, I almost had it.. I removed parts 28-33 and 32 (pin) and 33 (poppet) were gunked up pretty bad.
Cleaned, put it all back together. Turned the wheel to extreme left and right and PTO kicked in! It would
engage/disengage just fine!! I mowed half of the fields, then hit a log in the tall grass, and it stopped the mower.
The PTO is now stuck again, won't engage..Sigh. I hope I can get back to it (again) without having to remove the seat/bracket.
What a PITA!!! Thanks bud.

Hi JimB. Well, time allowed me to work on the PTO, so I was able to get 32, 33 back out and reclean/polish.
It didn't work this time.. I notice air/pressure release when I remove the 3/4" hex nut?, put it back together
to the best of my knowledge. The only thing I notice is that there are 2 (not one) washer, part. no 30,
on top of the spring. Makes me think someone has worked on this before and added that 2nd washed in order
to apply a little more pressure on the spring.?..

Not sure of what to try next.. I'm tempted to try to remove/clean everything in the bore under the boot/ 38.
It just looks intimidating with the number of valve stems, o-rings, washers, etc. Any suggestions before
I tear into that MCV bore.?..
Thanks again!
