Distributor

I recently had a problem with the distributor on my 1967 IHC Farmall 424 4cyl gas engine. The engine turned over but the roto button did not spin. I pulled the distributor out and replaced the shear pin on the gear, re-installed it and the roto button still does not spin. It does begin to move trying to start engine but it stops immediately. I have a book on the tractor but can not find the housing that the distributor goes into. I believe it is the rear of the timing case. has anyone else had this problem? Should I take out the distributor, remove the rear housing of the timing box? Is there anything special I should do before removing the rear of the timing box?

I had that happen on a 340 we have. I found the gear on the bottom of the distributor to be bad as in the teeth on the gear are ground down so it will catch some times and not catch at other times and boy was that not fun to figure out.

How long were the teeth roughly, the ones on my gear are short but do not seem to be ground down as they still come up to a point.

What is the name of the box that the distributor gear goes into? Do you know? I believe it is the rear of the timing gear box but I cannot find it anywhere in my manual.
