Drawbar trouble, 1947 Farmall A

The front bolts holding the drawbar to the chassis are threaded, correct ?? Mine appear to be stripped if so. What size are they supposed to be ?? The rear bolts attach with nuts and those are in place.
Thank you guys as always !!!!!

1/2 inch but many have been strippd out next size would be 9/16. Over the yrs and having many As and Bs going thru my fingers this is not uncommon. You could try some of the new stuff made to repair such and stay with 1/2 it would be worth a try.

Thread inserts (not helicoil) are a best answer they use regular taps and screw in easily. Time-sert is one of the type. Jim

That is as blind hole and not very deep so how are you going to drll a hole onthe money to insert anything without removeing final drve and going to a machine shop. How did you fix the problem?

Stripped out holes (not those worn into egg shapes) normally stay very close to their original location when drilled to a larger size. THe original drilling was to a depth that stopped short of passing through the casting boss. The re-drilling does need to be pretty square to the axis of the original, but capable technicians should have no problem setting up for drilling the tap drill for an insert. The depth should be no deeper than the original. I thought I was amplifying your earlier response as a great idea. Jim
One brand.

I agree but due to the location of the hole and the fact that its worn drilling by hand just cant be done. With some improvising a mag drill could be mlounted to drill the hole correct. I have had good luck rethreading to 9 1/6 using a hand tap its not easy cause going in crooked is easy to do. The best way would be remove the final and using a drilling milling tool to bore and tap the hole but first i would try the new thread repairing stuff as there is only thrust one way on that capscrew the pull will be absrbed by the rear 5/8 bolt. Lateral pull would be determined by wt on the drawbar and on an A shouldnt nver be any problem.
