New Distributors and Carbs

I am putting together a new W4 pulling tractor from scratch. I have all the parts I need except the distributor and the carburetor. I see "new" replacements advertised on many tractor parts web sites and I am curious about what kind of quality they are. Are these "new" replacements worth the price or would I be better off just buying original parts and rebuilding them? The engine build will require modification to both of them anyway. The distributor will get a Petronix ignition and the carburetor will need modifications of the jetting. Anyone have any experience with the "new" stuff?

Those new distributers have the Pertronix already in them, but no one seems to know what the maximum advance is. I do not know of any supplier of NEW carburetors for a Farmall H or a McCormick W4. All of them are rebuilt. Unless you are making major modifications to the engine, the stock carburetor should supply all the fuel it can use.

In other words, rebuild the distributer and carburetor that you already have.

The new aftermarket carburetor this is for sale on this website is jetted like the 50981DA. This is a very nice aftermarket replacement. The IH distributor, also from YT, comes with points not Pertronix.

But what is the maximum advance on that distributor?

you couldn't run fast enough to give me a petronix I upgraded to one in my boat, lasts 2 summers and left me stranded on the lake, they wouldn't stand behind it either.

back to points/condenser for me

Original H had 40 degree, super had 30 degree, any with fire crater power pack put in had 22 degree. Springs control the rate of advance, hole in shaft controls maximum advance, all are to be fully advanced by or some what before rated rpm.

So with that said all one would have to do is measure the hole diameter and compare that to the OEM distributers to determine what the advance is on the aftermarket. By the way, there is a code on the side of the oem distributers that identifies what version it is.
