ok so I go out to cut grass - with my

Great Bend 78A rotary mower. Notice it doesn't have a place to exit grass. Not sure why, it was at a sale and I got it reasonable and I needed a mower. SO..........

For that reason it does pull hard - Well on to my story - I notice my tractor starts to pull down like usual, I hear the whirring of the blades stop then I hear this sound like a jet engine starting up slow in speed then faster and louder then notice my pto starts slowing turning - engine pulls down and blades start turning again. Kind of freaked me out. I guess I have some kind of slippage going on in PTO. I raised mower up and ran the rest of the 10 acres and got it done with only this happening two more times. Am I in deep poop with this and burned up my pto and need a rebuild or is there some kind of adjustment for this?

Not sure the exact year of my 560 but I know its older than mmy dads cause my dads has the newer pto square topped handle on it. Mine is the older style round pushdown button.

Anyway, where should I start and don't tell me a new tractor LOL.

Thanks in advance , Robert[/url]

If yours has a small domed cap on top with a screw holding it down it is a band type PTO. make sure there is no slop or lost motion in the linkage to the side of
the PTO unit. Bungee the lever 1/2 way between on and off. (measure it). Take off that cap. Adjust both band studs so the PTO can be turned by hand with
pliers. Loosen each 1/2 tbryond usability. Jimurn and lock the jamb nuts. Put on the lid try it. If the studs are screwed down into the lock nuts, the bands
are probably worn

I bought a 560 last year and have most every repair book I could find for it. There seem to be 2 types of PTOs on them and a variation in one type. The band type as mentioned below can be adjusted from the outside as mentioned. The next one is a clutch type. Some of those are adjustable from the outside but earlier ones were not. On the clutch type PTO it needs to snap in, go over center, should stay engaged on it's own without holding pressure on the handle. According to the book if you run the tractor with pto engaged but not snapped in, for a short time it can burn the pto out. Later style clutch type pto unit has a large plug on the top of the unit. It is supposed to be adjustable from the outside without removing the unit. You need a special tool to adjust it right. My 560 had the earlier clutch type PTO but I thought it was slipping and I had to hold back on lever, didn't really snap in. I had a parts tractor with the newer style clutch type pto, with large plug on top. I swapped the units as the parts tractor one I had would "snap in" when engaged. Mine isn't really adjustable from the outside as I have an aftermarket 3 point that interfers. I was not able to locate a special tool for adjustment. I did build one that worked when unit was off the tractor. If your unit is slipping I wouldn't use it until you can adjust it and may already be too late. I suggest you pick up a copy of the service book as it has info on adjusting and overhaul if you need to.

ok thanks guys, I am going to try to run out to the barn and check and see what kind I have - most likely I will have the one that has to have a special tool or one that is burned up that needs rebuilt knowing my luck LOL. Oh well it is older than me and I don't feel near as capable somedays so no hard feelings if it does end up being bad HA!!!

well here is as far as I got in the heat today - pic of s/n and pic of pto I think this might be the on that Janicholson was talking about, maybe that little mushroom cap is in need of inspection?

haven't looked up the s/n yet to see what year it is but the plate looks like 7527 and on the corner of the plate there is a letter Z like Zebra if that means anything?

That's what I've heard referred to as a "planetary" PTO. Looking at the parts book, I believe this is what Janicholson refers to as a "band" PTO as well.

Later 560's had a clutch type PTO which had a stack of clutch plates rather than the band.

looks like mine was of the first 200 of the 560s built in 1959 - haven't found out what the Z thing is about though on the serial tag unless it was some update like the transmission issues they had kind of a recall thing I read/heard about once upon a time maybe it was a stamp they did when they did that work?

ok so I took the cap off, and I got the center of the handle determined, the screw towards the front of the tractor closest to the rear end housing was screwed in further down, the other screw was pretty high, kind of the opposite of the inner one. Well, I moved them both in/out until I was remaining pretty much center position of the handle. It pulls fine now and doesn't slip but it doesn't brake as well as it used to when you disengage the pto. So I am guessing I need to adjust again?

I wasn't quite sure of the process exactly due to the spelling of a couple of the words guessing you may have big fingers like mine that hit two or three keys at once LOL.

Praise the lord it doesn't appear I hurt anything and also have adjustment left and I mowed my entire pasture tonight. I mowed in 2nd on direct drive side of things.

I cant believe I actually was lucky enough to have the type of pto that is easily adjustable as well as not worn out.

God is good!!!

Thanks for the info on the letter Z I see I have a higher volume hydraulic pump - that gets a Yeee Haaa!!!!

All I ever use mine for is for splitting fire wood in the winter. I run the wood splitter off the pioneer aux outlets in back.
