Hello All;
I am in the market for a tractor and have found a 1955-56 IH 300 utility tractor loader. It has the torque amplifier on the trsnmission.I have owned Ford's in the past and do not have any experience with IH units. I know there is a different type of 3 point hitch and something called a 'fast hitch'. Please help me understand the IH 300 unit. Pro's and con's and (?)...
Thanks,

The fast hitch is friendly if you find implements that are designed for it. The tractor will have live Hydraulics, Live IPTO, and the TA is very important and desirable. Steering is either power, or manual. It needs to have the power steering if loader work is intended. The manual steering is not robust, and has had issues with strength. The Power Steering works OK. It is a frameless design, meaning that the engine block is a structural member. It can be broken using a loader that applies force to the tractor castings. I own the next generation 350U and would not trade it, but no loader has been on it. The power is as a farmall super H Plus 10%. Brakes require cleaning and attention twice a year, but are not nasty to work on as they are outside the rear chassis. Handy tractor, 3-14 inch moldboards in light/medium soil, 2-16. in tougher soil. IH utility tractors with loaders can have serious issues depending on how they have been used. If the tractor doesn't have power steering it will be extremely difficult to steer, even with no load in the bucket. I have a 300U (almost the same tractor as a 350U) that used to have a loader. Front axial pivot pin was worn odd along with the hole it fits into.Spines on the steering wheel column were stripped. Steering gear box was OK but there are stories of that being damaged as well.I don't have power steering on mine. I like the utility series of tractors but they weren't the best tractors for a loader. Check over the steering real well as part of deciding to buy.

I have to say they steer easy if they aren't worn out. My 350u steers easy always has but it never had a loader on it. And its not worn out... yet.
