Trying to get some history on my Farmall A

(quoted from post at 21:11:55 07/15/16) there's not much chance of finding they say lots of records were destroyed
boy did I mess that up ! there's not much of a chance to find where it came from. They say lots of the old records were destroyed during the take over

The serial# you quoted makes it a 1940 checking cast codes can verify yr also but there are no historys of where your B went after leaving factory in Chicago.

thanks for the info on my serial #. I see some casting codes on the main body around the shifter area, would that verify the year?

The engine serial and the chassis serial will be the same unless the seat is replaced. The early A may or may not have the cast numbers. If so 1940 is J listed as something like 10*5*J is Oct 5 1940.

SORRY, I missed one number, the serial # on my A model is FAA 148281. I've also attached a picture. Maybe now that will match up with what I was told it being a 1946 Model. George

IH's records were destroyed by a fire, not a takeover or the merger.

I'm OK, I had just left off one number, so I'm hoping someone can verify that my real number is in fact for a 1946 model.

Please elaborate, I have never heard that version of the story before.

People that were there said that a lot and I mean a LOT of stuff was thrown out when Abe the buzzard swooped in.

Quite a picture, but that fire happened to empty buildings after McCormick Works had been shut down.

I have no documents to back this up, but I suspect that the primary delivery/customer records (to whatever extent they initially existed) were kept at the branch houses. They were probably disposed of as each branch was shut down. Some may have been replicated at corporate level. But that would have been a lot of records.

The branches certainly had records on anything sold on credit. But I have no idea what they retained on cash sales or how long credit sale data was retained.
