My nephew has a IH966 he uses in his hay business. He is having problem with rear wheel wedges to the axle. He has checked with dealer for new wedges and needs to know if new style wedge will fit old style wheel?
Didn't get a good clear answer from parts man. I hope I have explained this clearly.

A 966 can have either of two style wheels. The clamp style or wedge lock style. Neither is considered new style although clamp style was around a lot longer on older model tractors. You have to use the same style that is on it and since he questions using new style I am guessing he has the clamp style. Any time you are having trouble keeping either style of those wheels tight, you have to observe the driving part of the wheel. It has to drive off the flats of axle and if the wheel contacts any part of the axle other than the flats, it will not stay tight. Operator manual gives correct sequence and method of tightening them. Now , if he is having trouble with the rim clamps, that is a whole different subject.

If he has the wdge lock type you can shim then where they wear. They need to be out close to the side of the hub to keep tight. We went through this on a 1466. If the locks are coming to close together they will work loose and not keep tight. The wheel could possibly wobble unseen to the eye in motion .
