Hydraulic Oil

I added about (2) quarts of detergent oil the hydraulic system on my international ?340?. Will this harm or effect the system efficiency?? Thanks for your response.

Yup, it's 10 gallons as I just changed mine last week.
Don't forget if you do decide to change it- drain the main case, drain the TA, and drain the PTO. Fill the PTO separately, and fill the main case which will also fill the TA sump.
If it was me..... I'd change it immediately. You can buy HyTran equivalent at Tractor Supply Hardware here for a reasonable price.

If detergent oil foams, how can we use it in automobiles that have hydraulic lifters or valve adjusters. Foam kills hydraulic lifter action and gear pumps used for oil supply in engines stir oil and make it foam. Answer, it has anti foam additive, same as hydraulic oil does. Hydraulic oil is very high detergent. We used it to clean dirty engines. And, a couple quarts in ten gallons won't mean a hill of beans.

I agree, no issue. I remember when 10wt oil was recommended for modifying transmission oil on SMTAs when first introduced to help with failing one way clutches. Jim

Thanks all of you for your feed back. It has been some time since I changed the oil, so I plan on changing it out soon.

They 450 manual was written before Hy Tran was available. The final drive, transmission and the TA were supposed to be filled with non detergent engine oil and then the very highly concentrated additive package. It contained all the properties needed for extreme pressure lubrication along with the fluidity of lighter lubes. This was to allow a fluid that could get into the ta small spaces to lube the ramp and rollers. I filled many a rear with that stinking additive along with the 10 wt oil. It was later prescribed for steering gears and worked great. No longer available. There was a separate hydraulic fluid used in the hydraulics.

I think you need to read up on detergent motor oil and hydraulic oil. One of the largest hydraulic pump manufactures (Vickers) says you never never mix detergent motor oil with hydraulic oil. According to them it does cause problems.

The recommended hydraulic oil in a pto operated pump for an IH corn planter is IH diesel oil, very high detergent. Says right on the container very good hydraulic oil. I've read enough and don't need to read anymore.
