Compare the 826 to the 856. It seems like the gear drive version might be doubling up the offering in that power class. Otherwise why both?
Just curious, Roy

The 826 was designed to beat the Green brand in a Hp feature price point war. It was in essence a minimum feature least standard equipment sales builder. Jim

I believe IH needed to fill the hole between the 75hp 756 and the 95hp 856 to compete with Deere.

The 856 Custom was built to compete with the 4000, as it was was a stripped down with low options, to make it a cheaper model.

i think it was only a 756 upgrade, d358 vs d310 and didnt use 756 # as different engine. when 826 came out 756 diesel stopped you could still get 756 gas no 826 gas unless hydro very few of those.

I'm pretty sure the 826 being built to compete with the JD 4000 is a myth. A JD 4000 was a stripped down basic tractor, but the 826 was just as "deluxe" as the 756 and 856.

It was built to fill a perceived "gap" between the 756 and 856. I don't know how you fill a gap between 75HP and 95HP tractors with a 90HP tractor, but, whatever...

826 was built to compete with the 4020. The 826 Custom was built to compete with the 4000. I worked at Deere during that time and yes the 826 competed well against the 4020. Deere was never afraid of the 856 because it was larger and pricier than the 4020. The 826 was another matter as it was bang on feature for feature designed to effectively compete with the 4020. Where IH messed up was not bringing out the 826 at the same time they brought out the 706 German Diesel in late 1966. The 4020 was just starting to get a foothold on the market at that time and the 826 would have put a stop to that. The 856 was $10000. the 826 was $9000 and the 756 diesel was $8000. The 4020 was $ 9000 to buy at that time and the competition was on price.

You say John Deere, was getting at foothold, on the market, that a understatement ,if i had a $5:00 bill for every 560 that was traded in on 4010's and the 4020, i could of retired, when i was 30. I admit. IHC was 4--5 yrs to late.in fact i dont know of any 826 ever sold. I seen one sitting in the showroom, and thats the last one i have seen.
