400 D starter

I have a quick question. I have a 400 D that has the earlier delco starter on it (with the solenoid that you can't get anymore and solenoid is shot). Will a later 400 or a 450 starter work? Just want to know so if it does I can put on a starter that you can get solenoids for.

Ford 6v (car not tractor, and later style that used volts to energize not ground ) relays (common part) will work. Leave the I terminal in-used. Jim

Is your solenoid the one that does not have the extended sleeve for the plunger? The later solenoids with the extended sleeve will work in place of the original style. If your solenoid is still OK electrically I believe the NAPA STK28 repair kit should have the parts to replace the cap and contacts.
 
does not have the extension I would prefer to change the plunger and solenoid if I can, or switch out the whole starter if possible.
