Going to look at a SMTA

I'm going to look at a SMTA this weekend. From the pics the guy sent me it has the pto delete plate on it. Dumb question but, is there anything more involved than finding the proper pto shaft and installing it or is there a lot more involved i.e. Splitting the tractor. Thanks

The SMTA could be ordered with no TA and no PTO. If so it will only (probably) be able to have a Trans driven Non-Live PTO. The serial number and suffixes will
be valuable info. The decal still said SMTA, but there was no Torque Amplifier Flag on the emblem. If it is a TA tractor with provision for a IPTO, then yes it
only needs the PTO unit and controls. Jim

It does have ta. The serial tag is missing. There is a 80,??? Number stamped in the bell housing where the tag belongs.

On bottom of center housing just ahead of where it joins transmission housing is a tee shaped cover. Does it have a short steel lever with two bolt hole settings or just a plate with nothing coming out of it?

Another way to tell when equipped with a t/a is to remove the oil level plug on left side of center housing. Have someone hold the clutch pedal down and bump the starter. Shine a light or stick a plastic straw in just enough to see or feel if gear turns. If it does the tractor came equipped to use IPTO. If it doesn't turn unless clutch pedal is let up it's not equipped to run a independent PTO. If you get the engine serial number and it's the original engine I can probably get you close to what serial number the tractor was in case the stamped in one is off.

To give you a little idea of what would need to be located and installed if the provisions aren't there already, there's an IPTO drive gear that is driven by the pressure plate at the flywheel. This in turn spins a shaft that runs underneath the TA and transmission, into the rear end housing, with all the requisite bearings and gears. I would expect the provisions for the IPTO to be there in the castings, you would just need to find and install the pieces to get the power from the flywheel back to the rear of the differential housing. You also need a PTO unit, it's not just a shaft like on the older tractors.

Thanks for the replies. After looking at the pics more closely and looking at parts online, the pto is there or the shaft has been taken out. The pics the guy sent only show the upper third of the pto. He works construction and I can't reach him to clarify. If I get home I'll post some pics. She ain't pretty , but she'll fit in with the five others

They also could be ordered with T/A and NO PTO . And then there is NOTHING up ft . to hook to . It would requier a lot of work and lots of pieces and parts to put one in.
