F-20 rear end and transmission oil

Pulled the drain plug and the oil come out very black. Looked good, but very black. Don't know if it has ever been changed. Smells like gear oil and heavy like gear oil. Was that what was put in it in 1936? Ordered a operators manual book, but not here yet.

It's probably been changed, but old gear grease has that distinctive smell. Good news is it came out, and you didn't mention a lot of water. Any modern gear grease works, 8w90, 140.
 
originally it was a 160 wt I believe , use the 85w140 , 80w90 will be dripping out the input before you get it filled up.
 
If it looks clean and has no water in it, put it back in. That old gear oil is good stuff, newer stuff is somewhat thinner and will make the transmission noisier.
 
If your oil is dirty or contaminated , I use "00" grease , it is pourable but only on warm days .
