I had a new stud installed in the case/field coil. When they put it together, the end plate was bound up on the end of the shaft, and the end plate was only about half way onto the shaft. It was definitely stuck. They told me it was stuck before I picked it up. Evident they were not going to charge me for re assembling it, but they weren't going to spent anymore time on it either. I pulled it apart and deburred the shaft. By putting the cap on backwards, so the brushes are outside the starter, the cap fits nicely on the shaft and turns freely. I put it together correctly(?) and installed it on the tractor. Turned the key and the ground started to smoke. The starter did not rotate. Took the starter off and put it in a vise, and removed the end plate again. The shaft is binding up in the bushing when the pilot diameter of the end plate makes contact with the case. If you pull the end plate far enough away from the case so that the pilot is not started into the case, the starter will spin very fast. I don't understand why it is misaligned. Unless they dropped the armature and bent it. What am I missing here?
