My super MD jumps out of 5th gear it will not go to middle of shift pattern when it jumps out only enough to slip back in on the go without using the clutch it only happens when going up or down hills or
pulling flat ground it will stay in gear the shifter is in good shape, how long would it take to split tractor and replace the gear, bearings and put back together in a limited time frame. I have not removed
the cover plate yet, do to time, and don't want to see the horror that could follow. I have heard it could be spring and ball or the gear its self. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated Thank you Jake

The 4th fifth slider gear is forward in the trans. it has teeth for 4th, and splines for 5th. The splines are used to connect the input shaft to the output shaft, giving direct drive. The teeth on the splines engage only 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch. Raking it into gear for all of its life wears the edges of the gear splines and shaft splines. Replacing both is usual. there are parts available. Jim

As Jan says, the teeth that are on the inside of the 4/5 sliding gear are worn so it won't stay in gear (engage the splines) when there is a load on it. It could also be that the pilot bearing that supports the connection of the input shaft and the differential shaft is worn. Best to replace that pilot bearing when you replace the gear. You do not have to split the tractor to do this job. You do have to disconnect the drive coupling in front of the transmission and remove enough parts so the bearing carrier along with the input shaft can be removed. I'm not sure, but I think removing the belt pulley drive will give you enough access fron the top to do the job, in which case you don't ave to remove the entire transmission cover.

I would also appreciate more input on how this is done as my 4th gear on my 1944 is worn badly. On the farm they used 4th gear 90% of the time and the help would always cram it in gear instead of waiting for the gears to stop spinning. It got to a point that they would drive it around while holding the shifter to keep it from popping out.
The gear even wobbles on the shaft too.

Can be done with no split IIRC, but with the top removed because 4th is driven from the countershaft and that gear must also be replaced due to thrashing it into
gear. Jim

I just priced the front gear on the main shaft on an H. IH wanted $640.00. I got all three gears on the upper shaft on Ebay for $100. Used, but a lot better than mine.
