1940 farmall h

found a h with a m&W hand clutch in the salvage yard. i have a 1940 and was thinking about putting it on my H. how much is involved? I heard you can't get parts for there is that true? what are your thoughts on these?

Do it. It is a game changer. Some parts are not made any more, but most wear parts are available new or rebuilt. They are great for making hay or bush hogging with the tractor because they allow the PTO to operate while in gear and stopped. They also prevent the pushing that happens when operating a high inertia device like a baler or rotary mower. If the tractor you own is not intended to be a trailer queen, you might consider just changing entire rear 1/2 of the chassis. Jim

Parts can be hard to find, but not impssible.Someone on here(Nebraska Kirk?) 'deals' in parts/whole assemblys. Not to bad to change. do it all from the leftside. IIRC, removel of the top is not needed. If possible, buy the hole rear end.Just to be sure you get everything.Better still...buy the whole tractor.

As Jim says,"game changer". I put one on my Super M 25 years ago. Baled many thousands of bales with it. Worked great! Now,I havent had a baler hooked to it in 10 years. Thinking of removeing and selling it. BTW. I found out the hardway that an M and Super M are different. An M clutch will not directly bolt to a SuperM. You need some other parts.......Luckily,the M/W factory in Illinois had the parts, and was very helpful.Even shipped the correct paperwork(parts list/installation instructions) for free.I did have to spend about $600 for all the needed parts(ouch!).Only pd $200 for it when purchaced.Go for it!
