International A Steering Knuckle Arm Ball Dimensions

Does anyone know the original dimensions of the ball on the Farmall A Steering Knuckle Arm and Tie Rods? I want to tighten up the steering on my 1946 International A. I got the steering knuckle and tie rods off. The balls are out of round, and I thought I would take them to a machine shop and have them built up and rounded. I have the parts and service manuals, but I do not see the dimensions of the balls.

Thanks in advance.

Larry

Just take a disc sander and calipers a little grinding and you can make them round again ive done it several times they dont need to be original size as the adjusstment takes care of that.

Wire brush the existing ball and measure across the least worn areas. The use of a smaller ball will cause point contact with the pucks and wear much faster. Near original size is much preferred. Jim

I measured with my caliber and the largest ball is .525 inches and they go down to about .482. I doubt the slack in my steering is due wear on the balls, but while I got them off it will not hurt to size them back up again. Never have found what dimension they are supposed to be but I suppose 5.25 is close enough.

Thanks

40thous is a little over 1/32nd so it wont be hard to grind a little off to get them close to being round again. Little play here and there and soon it all adds up

I like what this guy did to his Cub. Easy and cheap and a perfectly new peice. I actually ordered some for a Cub and some for a Super A / A tractor. I don't remember where I got the sizes to get mine, I probably asked the guy who did that modification. I still need to try it out and see how it works.

Here is where I got my sizes from. I ended up ordering 7/8 balls for the Super A / A tractor.
