what causes the middle main bearing to wear more than the front and rear main.....curious ......cause out of 4 cranks they all have the high ridge where the oil hole starts and is,worse on opposite side of oil hole,,,,front and rear are smooth.......just curious again.......dewy.......

The center bearing is surrounded with con rods on both sides, as a result the bearing will wear proportionately more. All cranks are flexible and bend under the strss of combustion pressures. 3 Main bearing engines are prone to this flexing because there are two opposing throws between bearings. 5 Main bearing 4 cylinder engines are far less prone to this issue. thanks jim,,,,what you think about storing crankshafts horizonal or vertical....parts guy said vertical due to warping,,,,,,,any truth to that one...........dewy

No real difference on the shafts we discuss here. Shafts from a straight 8 supported on eachend might be a different issue, but the real issue is rust. A spray down with corrosion inhibitor, and wrapping in a sealed plastic bag with a dessicant are real factors, especially if the work is to be stopped for a month or more, or put into inventory. Red if that crank isn't bent you aren't gonna bend it , and if you need to store anything metal coat it with black oil and then coat with grease over the oil , I had a caterpillar crank stored for 3 years and no rust , that isn't heard of in the south.
