buying a 6 volt bat to crank the M over

Is 975 CCA overkill ? I just made my three wires out of 00 guage welding ground cable. Put on a new starter switch. Now time for a brand new 6 volt battery. Have been taking my time to get the starting system back to good order, and want a beefcake of a battery to compliment it.
something like this

I will measure the head room under the gas tank, it should. I don't plan on putting it in a battery box. In fact, have never seen an M with a battery in the box, always see just the bare battery sitting under there.

If ya ain't gonna use the box then it will probably work.

My battery is in a proper box under the tank mounted as it left the factory.

I have seen many with a battery box by the way.....

Ii use the highest output grp 2 I can get.

take the meaqsurements of the batt box when you look for a new one. Get the starter refreshed also out Ms started with the 6v system till they were traded off on a 560D we ground feed at least 2 time a week pluss other jobs in the winter always started but now everyone thinks they need 12v ect we didnt have that available but kept things in shape.

I've got a Group 1 6V on my M and it cranks the engine over just fine. I don't use it much in the winter and have a coolant heater to warm things up.

Every time someone mentions not using a box for an under tank battery on an H or M, I remember Dad's H laying upside down in a trench silo with gasoline pouring out the mashed tank and nothing between the battery posts and the metal fuel tank but a coat of paint. That was roughly 60 years ago, and then the only place to get a battery that would fit the box was to buy it from an IH dealer, but it cost quite a bit more than a car battery, though the car battery was too tall for the lid to fit. After that episode we always had the correct battery and the lid with the rubber bumpers was in place. I still own that tractor, and it is my preferred parade tractor.

I bought a reproduction battery box for my 1946 Farmall m and my 1951 farmall h had a factory original on it that needed some wire welding by me to repair which made it solid again.

Personally I would size the battery to fit in those factory boxes (I actually use a 12 volt that fits in both tractors as I have converted them both from 6 to 12 volts and have no regrets)

I am a believer in having the battery box to contain that battery as it rests directly under the fuel tank. If you do not wonna buy a battery box there was a falla on here a years ago who built a really clever one for his farmall m using angle iron, a buzz box stick welder, and a hacksaw for cheap and easy. Search of the archives should turn that thread up.

I have an 8N - not the motor of your M but it starts with a 6 volt battery. I have owned the tractor going on 10 years now and one thing I have learned is I don't have enough clothes to sit on the thing when it is zero out. It will start reliably to 20 degrees and I have started it at 10 degrees more than once - 20 degrees is all the clothes I have.

Rather than spend money on a super size battery you don't need except, maybe, on very cold days, I would consider a battery heater. If we consider 80 degrees to be 100% battery power, at 32 degrees it drops to 65% and at 0 degrees it drops to 40%. The battery you posted is 1200 CA which is at 32 degrees and 975 CCA which is at 0 degrees. A smaller battery that fits your tractor can easily beat the 975 CCA of the larger battery if warmed up a little.

Just a thought to consider....
