Hi folks, here in the UK I am looked apon as an IH expert and have today been asked the following question.
On a H rear end can the oilseal part number 48498D on the end of the diff pinion shaft be replaced without
taking the top off and taking the diff to bits. This is the seal to stop oil going onto the brake bands.
Just as a matter of intrest the little UK built B250, B275, B414 etc we have to take the hydraulic lift unit
off and take the diff to bits. Second question is how mutch oil is needed for the gearbox and rear end.

Yes. Remove the brake cover, brake band, and then remove the drum. The oil seal is right there.
 
Original seal is a double seal inside of an outer retainer and it takes some digging to get it all out but that is how you attack it . New seals will be just single and with all the movement on the end of those brake shafts, you might want to positon the seal as close to the bearing as possible. The reason for the movement is that the inner end of that brake shaft is supported by the side gear in the differential. It wasn't until the IH 656 that IH wised up a bit and put a bearing (bushing or needle depending on Serial number) in the differential to support that inside end along with a tapered roller bearing as the outer bearing.
