Making the 3 wires for the 6 volt system. Using 2/0 guage welding cable. The shielding is thin rubber so I want to put a protective casing around it, have seen people use a garden hose cut length wise. any other tried and true ways to protect your battery cables?

Unless the welding cable insulation is in bad shape, it should be sufficient for electrical insulation. If you want to protect it further, there are several styles of wiring harness wraps that you could put over it for additional mechanical protection.

I've seen some that looks like a corrugated plastic hose that is split lengthwise which would be very easy to apply. If you want it to look more like an original battery cable, there are woven cloth sleeves for making your own wiring harnesses that you could slide on it. Not sure where to tell you to find that, but I've seen it around at places that cater to restoration work.

Using shrink tubing to cover those areas that are in contact, or have clamps on them is a great way to minimize wear while looking good. It slips over the fitting on the small end, and shrinks in place with a heat gun. Mark the locations ahead of permanent installation (multi layers are possible). I have seen and have 6 inch diameter shrink tubing, so it is available in large sizes. Grangers, or other electrical supply stores. Jim

You don't need any cover on those cables, two cable supports on right side, couple farm/fleet grommets entering batt. box. Solder cable ends and shrink wrap. My Super M wouldn't start with a new 6 volt batt. and those cables, started good cold, hot it grunted a couple times and burned up two of those new junk starter switches, I went 12 V and hid a Ford starter solenoid behind the gas tank support. Can't post any picts. for some reason.

A product called heat shrink tubing. It comes in various sizes. The best kind has an adhesive inside. Major semi truck dealerships or parts suppliers should carry the sizes you will need.

Just for looks, other wise the paint would have been scuffed up from the reg. being bolted on.
