IH 55 Baler with U2

Did the U2 power units used on the 55 baler have an engine clutch or did the baler have a clutch of some sort. From pictures, I don't see a clutch lever on the engine bell housing belt drive unit. Thanks

My grandfathers old wire tie 55 is sitting where it was last parked. Don't remember a clutch but a lever that engages the belt to the flywheel, kind of an "all or nothing" thing. I haven't looked at it closely in many years though.

Our 55t had a flat belt drive;the tension pulley had a lever that released the belt tension. After starting the engine, you had to slip the belt over the running engine pulley, and then give the flywheel a push with your foot as you engaged the belt with the tension lever.I did it countless times, from about age 12 or 13 on.When we stopped the baler,we slowed the engine down, released the belt tension, idled the engine a moment, and shut it down.If we had a problem,we would release the tension, and pull the belt off the flywheel, and let it idle while we fixed the problem. We did not let it idle with the belt slipping on the engine pulley so as not to burn the belt.I can still hear the belt screech,in my mind,as we engaged it to start baling!Mark

Exactly like our 55s and 57. The lever actuated the belt to move all the moving parts. Dad has tore up the one baler belt drive pulley. Is using it for projects.

Balers didnt have clutch but combines did so if you need a clutch you need the combine u-2. Same with the Cub and also the Continetal. Cubs had starters also. Do you need a clutch assy for a u-2

Using the belt tightener as a clutch is a big mistake. Particularly when stopping the machine. The belt will fly off and wrap around the engine pulley and destruct. Strings from the belt will wrap around the shaft and Destroy the seal.; I wired a switch I can reach from the tractor to kill the engine when something happns. I also warm up the engine with the belt off, shut off, put the belt on, engage tightener, and start engine with machine in gear. There is enough reduction so the.. starter has no problem Been there, done that too many times

When I got my U 2 which has a clutch, I decided I wanted the angle drive gear box for it. I think that gear reducer box was used on balers. Found one and realized no clutch. I wanted the clutch so I opted out of that angle drive thing where the pulley turns slower than engine speed and decided to live with the pulley turning at engine speed. I don't think IH made the angle drive with a clutch.

Never did read the difference in sheet mteal as both were used on those engines air cleaner stacks were option along with precleaners.
