Farmall 706 intake manifold question

One thing leads to another with this thing. As long as I have the fuel tank off, well, the valve cover looked rusty too, and I can't take it off if I've reinstalled the gas tank, so I might as well deal with that now.
THEN, I noticed that I could see the ground between the exhaust manifold and the block. Even a non-genius like me knows that ain't right. So, off come the manifolds.
The intake manifold has two rings that go to the forward and rear intake ports. There is no such ring in the middle port. The parts manual calls them "intake manifold pilots".
My curiosity is piqued. Does anyone know the purpose of these rings? Are they to help with the re-assembly? Why not one in the middle?

One of these days I hope to start re-assembly!!!!
Thanks,
Jim

The rings act like a guides for positioning the manifold in allignment while bolting it on. Similar to the alignment rings between a head and block, or trans and engine plate. Jim

The rings on manifold are to help positon the manifold and gasket and not needed in center because if both ends are in place , center will be. Also, don't quite understand the part about valve cover not coming off with fuel tank on. They do indeed come off rather easily compared to a lot of engines without taking fuel tank off or loose.

Thanks for the responses. The rings as guides makes sense; since I haven't put the manifolds back on, the obviousness (?) of the function of the rings hadn't hit me.
As for the need for the tank to be removed, I'll look again at that at reassembly time. It sure didn't seem to me that there was enough room to remove the valve cover bolts, much less "roll" the cover to one side or the other for removal.
On the other hand, this time it goes on first so it's a moot point.
Thanks again.
Jim

I remove the coil mounting bracket and distributor cap. Leave wires all hooked up and just down out of the way. Tip the cover, pull out two rear bolts and cover comes right off. On the diesel version of that engine, it requires removing the intake manifold. Still no big job. Lord knows, I had a few hundred of those covers off. Even pulled heads on the gas 706 without taking tank off. Have to remove shield for that and do some fancy work with the last six push rods and a helper to avoid damage to head gasket. On the 4 & 560's with that engine, I always raised the front end of fuel tank support to remove head but not the valve cover.

Thanks for the instructions. I'll save that info in my "just in case" file. The way things are going, I'll need it some day!

I still have a half dozen clothes pins in my tool box to use to hold up those back push rods when working on those engines
