No. 6 Hammer Mill

I just bought No 6 IH hammer mill to use at shows.
It only came with one screen and it has 3/8 size
holes. Will it work for ear corn and hay? Thanks

I once had a no. 6 hammermill and also had only one screen. I believe my screen was 1/2 inch and I did grind some ear corn with it, but a larger screen would be better. I think you could use the 3/8 screen for ear corn, but you are going to have a lot of dust. Don't know about hay, but I doubt it would work well at all with that small a screen. I now use a no 4-E mill for demos at shows. I use a 3/4 inch screen for ear corn.

It will work but larger would be better. What are the dimensions i have some screens. I need the width and distance across the "bow" and with the curve up top to bottom

The 3/8 screen will work great for shelled corn. 1/2 works good too if you don't want it too fine. I have a 3/16 screen and have ground shell corn through it in an attempt to make corn meal. Not fine enough, needs to be screened and recycled. I thiink you would need a 3/32 screen to make corn meal. Those smaller screens are made with thinner metal and have reinforcement on the back side. I have a parts catalog that lists all the screens that IH made. I think the no 6 mill is in there if you are interested. Are you coming to Crossville this weekend?

Don, I was really looking for a U2 power unit like yours to go with all my A collection when I found this U4 mounted on a trailer belted to a No. 6 mill. I know very little about hammer mills but thought it would be a good addition to our working demonstrations display at our show. Shelled corn is much easier to find than ear corn around here so I guess all is good for demonstrations. Sorry I can't make it to Crossville this weekend.

That power unit and mill mounted on the trailer will make a real nice demo unit. Moving it at higher speeds, best to take the cyclone off unless it is really well mounted.

Yeah, a 3/4 for ear corn and it takes a fair amount of power. Are u going to the Red Power Roundup and have it there?

Don't even think putting any hay in there, Fist of all it wont go in there if it's in a 14 x 18 bale. It takes a 16 inch or bigger mill to handle hay, if it's baled hay, even with the 20 inch Arts Way, i had factory retarder bolts in there, to help slow the bale, packages, from going in there to fast, and it would make a BANG. I would maybe grind 2 bales, in with the 100 bushels or ear corn for the sows, and it's hard, slow work,, and that's with a 3//4 inch screen.

Thos always get good attention at a show just gets pricey buying corn to grind then what to do with it when ground unless you have some hungry pigs.

you tear the slices so they go in our old Montgomery ward mill had a traveling table web and we used to grind some hay once in a while during winter when grinding hog feed shelled corn and 40% protein. That was inthe days before grinder-mixers blowed upstairs and then gravity fed down to feeders. Also to loadout bin when hogs were on pasture in summer temp fields 4-5 acres scooped many thous bu feed that way into the feeders from flare box pulled by the B. THOSE WERE THE DAYS
