M Live hydraulic pump?

Hello all. It's about time for me to put a live pump on my '51 M. I only use a brush hog, heavy back blade and wagon. It does have a Saganaw 3-point on it.
I'm reading in the forums here some are advising to not buy Behlen or M&W original as parts are getting hard to find. Can someone point me in the direction of where I might find a new one? I am finding a lot that are $500+ ... Am I really looking at that kind of price tag?

Your 51 (if the production date is July or later) has the heavier gears and correct bolt spacing for a OEM pump. This is the most desirable. If an earlier production date, it will need the Cam gear and front cover as well to avoid failure. Costs are going to be in that category for used good, new replacement are higher. Jim

Yep. that kind of money. A new 'aftermarket' is (give or take) $1000.A good(used) pump that is in good share will probably never give you a spec of trouble.Especially with the limited hours you will use it.Just put in clean oil and keep it clean.Personally,I wouldn't worry a bit about "parts availability"

I personally would not trust a "used" factory-style pump. They took it off for a reason, and that reason is usually because it stopped pumping. Yet, people will pay $300, $400 for them. After going through a couple of dud used pumps, you've got nearly the cost of a brand new pump into the project, and still no hydraulics!

IH type pump will need a manifold to attach hydraulic lines. Another cost if no manifold with pump. M&W uses pipe threads in pump body. IH type pump will fit bolt pattern on M engines starting tractor serial 238082, engine serial 228082 built during August 1950. But those front covers are made so if a IH pump has the hour meter drive on end of pump input shaft it can contact inside cover, will need shortened. When looking in the drive hole if you see a screen you need to check. Some will get so close that you can't tell pressure is pushing on the pump shaft when pump bolts are tightened up. Later IH moved the screen to under fill cap.
If you don't need anymore pressure than the other pump put out keep the pressure down on the pump. Lots of aftermarket valves won't go below 1500 PSI on the relief. Install one to give 900 to 1000 PSI unless you need the last few hundred. Can't depend on what camshaft gear is in the engine unless looked at. Lower pressure will help them all live.

Thank you for your replies. I checked my serial and it does show as a '51 (FBK 260XXX X1) but how would I determine the month Jim? And just to make sure I am understanding this correctly, we are talking about a pump that bolts in front of the distributor? Can anyone send me a link for a new OEM? I have searched and can only find used. Thanks again.

This site and other places have the pumps that bolt to front engine cover. Look at SM, 400 or 450 gasoline hydraulic.
All 51 models have the bolt pattern for pump. Your tractor will probably need the front of hydraulic pump trimmed.
Your ignition housing drive gear will work on pumps.
M&W pumps will also bolt to your engine.

The letter code will probably be your best guess as to what month the parts were made. I'm not able to look at my M but pretty sure there is a code on front cover.
